Mary Wallace, MA, SLP ’83 received her B.A. in Speech-Language Pathology from the State University of New York at Plattsburg in 1979 and received her Masters degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1983. Since that time she has specialized exclusively in the diagnosis and treatment of stuttering in children and adults. Mary was a part-time faculty member at the University of Colorado from 1985 to 1992. She provided clinical supervision of Masters level graduate students and organized and implemented a state-wide speech-language-hearing screening program. She worked in a private practice setting specializing in stuttering for nine years prior to opening the her own center in 1992. At that time she and long-time colleague Patty (Ogrodnick) Walton, '85, opened the Center for Stuttering Therapy in Boulder and Denver. Mary currently works out of the Boulder office providing specialized therapy services for both children and adults. You can visit their website at: http://www.coloradostutteringtherapy.com/index.htm

Fun with Fluency book
Mary & Patty's book Fun with Fluency

Mary is co-author with Patty of the preschool treatment book Fun With Fluency and has published several articles concerning stuttering in national and international journals. She has presented extensively both on a state and national level in the area of stuttering disorders and provides consultation services and training workshops for parents, speech pathologists and educators, along with intensive therapy for children across the United States. In her own words, Mary brings us up to date on her life and work and reminisces on her fond memories of the department: Interestingly enough I have always been passionate about stuttering. I had most of my clinical experience with stuttering from school-aged thru adult. Because I had vocal nodules as a graduate student and received speech therapy at the CU clinic for a voice disorder, I also had an interest in voice disorders. My entire practice at the Center for Stuttering Therapy in Boulder is devoted to treating stuttering. My youngest client is 2 1/2 years old and my oldest client is 65 years old. I am still passionate about helping people who stutter find their voice and achieve functional fluency. I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to specialize in stuttering from the very beginning of my career. I hope to continue doing stuttering therapy on a full time basis but would love to get more involved with teaching and mentoring in the field of stuttering. I have very fond memories of the CU clinic as it had a huge stuttering program and the opportunities to learn about stuttering from experience were tremendous. In addition, the department was smaller and the faculty was pretty close. I remember having my first Christmas in Boulder with my husband at the Sweetman's house with Peter and Lori Ramig. I also remember that the faculty was so warm and welcoming and was agreeable to attending parties with the students. We had a fabulous end of the year party at my house and almost the entire faculty was present and a lot of fun! I remember that the faculty was very vested in helping all of the students be the best therapist they could be.

Mary and Tom Wallace
Mary and Tom in Steamboat

I am an avid skier and weight trainer and am trying to become an avid bicycle rider with the encouragement of my husband, Tom. In addition, I love to read and spend time at our second home in the mountains. My husband Tom is also a CU alumni (Masters degree in Business from CU, Denver, 1987) and he is a CFO for GE Analytical instruments in Gunbarrel. We have been happily married for over 27 years and have two sons. Our oldest, Tommy, is in the Business school at CU and our youngest, Ryan is in the Business school at CSU. Both boys love to ski and engage in sports. We are very proud of both of them. We also have two adorable little dogs, Katy and Lili, who brighten our days and entertain us to no end.
